Course Description: Step away from the desk and into the living page. This field-based class takes writers into the landscapes that inspire — Airlie Gardens, Wrightsville Beach, Carolina Beach State Park, Longleaf Park, Halyburton Park and the NHC Arboretum — to write, read and talk together in place. Each meeting blends craft discussion with on-site writing and close observation. Each location has a covered area available in case of inclement weather.

Course Description: Travel writing is one of the oldest and most alive literary forms, encompassing personal essay, journalism, memoir and cultural criticism. In this course, we read celebrated practitioners of the craft and write our own work, exploring how to render a place vividly, navigate the ethics of writing about others and find deeper meaning beneath the surface of any journey.

Whether you’re new to writing or looking to refresh your creative practice, Nature Writing 101 will help you slow down, notice more, and transform your experiences with nature into powerful, memorable writing.
